The Grand Finals start on Monday

The statewide competition of Jugend forscht Bayern 2017 will take place between Monday 3rd April and Wednesday 5th April. Young researches will present their work to a panel of experts and will compete for the title of state winner in seven fields. The public has also been invited to Jugend forscht Bayern.

When can the projects be seen?

The participants will present their projects at the Ball Sports Hall in Vilsbiburg (Urbanstrasse 2) on Monday 3rd April from 11 am to 5 pm and on Tuesday 4th April from 9  to 11:30 am. Admission is free, registration is not required. In addition, the VHS Vilsbiburg will offer free tours on Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 pm and on Tuesday from 10 to 11 am. On Monday, the state winner of 2016, Lukas Kamm, will give a talk on the fascination of Jugend forscht at 2 pm. What are the project about?

The participants – pupils, trainees and students aged between 15 and 21 – have done scientific work in one of the following special fields:  Biology, chemistry, geo and space science, mathematics/information technology, physics, engineering and the working world. There is a wide spectrum of topics: While some of the participants examined solutions to daily life, others found inspiration in their school lessons. Analytic work, for example, on the dependency of neural networks made it into the finals, just as highly practical projects, like producing bioplastics. Vincent Fischer from Mistelgau has already taken part in Jugend forscht eight times. In his project "Algorithmic composition", the 18-year old produced a computer that composes music.

For Victoria Haller from Vilsbiburg, Jugend forscht will be a home match. With her project on more efficient treatment of wastewater, this will be the fifth time she has taken part. "When you enjoy something, you keep taking part", she says.

A particularly large number of Apps will be presented this year. Leonhard Katzowitsch from Veitshöchheim has programmed a software that will make daily life easier for diabetics. Using photos and a sophisticated algorithm, the App can calculate the percentage of carbohydrates in food.

What can participants win?

The young researches have already achieved a lot. 1,921 participants with 1,214 projects were registered throughout Bavaria. Of that, 85 young researchers made it into the finals – with a total of 58 projects. The three best participants in each field will receive an award and the state winners will qualify for the national finals that will take place in Erlangen at the end of May. For many of the participants, exchanging ideas with like-minded people is just as important as possibly winning. For decades now, Jugend forscht has been considered a stepping stone for a career in the MINT subjects. The national winners will be announced in an award ceremony on Wednesday.

When will Jugend forscht come to Vilsbiburg again?

This year, the DRÄXLMAIER Group is sponsoring Jugend forscht Bayern for the first time. Jugend forscht will take place in Vilsbiburg again in 2019.
